Authorities have released the name of the boy who drowned at Lake Berryessa on Sunday.

Alan Diaz, 14, of San Francisco died while trying to help a friend who was having trouble in the water, according sheriff’s Capt. Jean Donaldson.
Diaz was swimming with friends at Oak Shores near the Foxtail Flat Area.

“They were about 10 feet from shore. One of his friends begin having problems in the water, and Alan swam over to help him,” Donaldson said. “That person was able to make it to the shore, but Alan didn’t make it.”
Donaldson said a person on the shore was able to retrieve Diaz from the 10 -15 foot deep water and bring him to shore.

“They started CPR, but were never able revive him,” he said.
Diaz was taken to Queen of the Valley Medical Center where he was pronounced dead.

Diaz is the third person to drown at Lake Berryessa this year.

" My heart and prayers go out to the young mans family, but also, and especially to MarionM11...how awful to have been in that situation. Was there a language barrier? I can't imagine why they wouldn't want to accept help. It's truly sad. "

" MarionM11- What do you mean " why didn't they ask for help?" If you saw any type of struggle or red flag, why wouldn't you JUST help?!! Maybe they were laughing because they didn't think they were in trouble.. But hey it's better to be safe than sorry!!! "

" I saw all types of crazy stuff during my 5 years as a lifeguard. I saw a parent stand 2 feet away from her drowning child, doing nothing, waiting for the lifeguard to jump in the pool to rescue her kid. Who knows what those boys were thinking or if they were on drugs. "

" a girl came up to us asking us for our goggles saying that someone was drowning so we gave them to her. everyone was looking but there was nothing. my husband ran over to the family and they were saying in anyone know how to swim please help in spanish and his friend told him and my husband jumped in to look. a few minutes later a guy found him and pulled him to shore where my husband began cpr. he performed cpr for about 5 to 10 mins before someone else took over. we stood back and watched as they kept doing it trying to revive him. my heart goes out to his family and friends and i want to say how sorry i am.
