9:30 p.m.Rep. Mike Thompson, D-St. Helena, defeated Republican challenger Zane Starkewolf by a landslide Tuesday night in the race to represent Congressional District 1, according to preliminary results.

Thompson received 69 percent of the votes as of press time, with 20.5 percent of precincts reporting districtwide. In Napa County, he received 72 percent of the votes with nearly half of ballots counted.
Thompson, in a statement issued Tuesday night, thanked the voters of the First Congressional District “for putting their faith in me once again to be their voice in Washington.”

“I look forward to working with President-elect Obama to rebuild our economy, end the war in Iraq, reform healthcare, and put in place sustainable, affordable energy policies,” Thompson said.
Starkewolf, the 27-year-old Republican nominee who lives in Davis but hails from St. Helena, received 24.5 percent of the vote districtwide and 23.6 percent in Napa County. Green Party candidate Carol Wolman received 6 percent districtwide and in Napa County.

This marks Thompson’s sixth successful run for Congress, having represented District 1 — the expansive district that begins in Yolo County and includes all of Napa and Lake counties, as well as portions of Sonoma, Mendocino, Humboldt and Del Norte counties — since 1998.
Thompson serves on the House Committee on Ways and Means and the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence in Congress.

Thompson won handily in the June primary, defeating Democratic Mendocino activist Mitch Clogg. Starkewolf in June defeated former Napa prosecutor Doug Pharr.

" Thompson should have lost his job for voting for the $800 billion bailout package last month but It seems nobody gives a care about the added debt load this guy just put on our backs, Our kids backs and future grand kids.
Thompson is a disgrace and political trough feeder! "

" I am glad the Mike was re-elected and I am glad he had the courage to back the rescue plan....as bad as the situation is now, it would have been much worse if our government hadn't done everything in its power to help. We have to all work hard to reestablish a healthy economy and reduce our deficits then. We can do it if we work together. "
