A gratifying drop in DUIs

Dear editor, it was very gratifying to read in the Jan. 26 Register of the decrease in the number of DUI accidents and deaths between 2007 and 2008.

To go from seven deaths and 139 injuries in 2007 to a single death and 10 collisions in 2008 can only make every motorist, pedestrian and bicyclist feel more secure on Napa roads.
It was also reassuring to hear that our local law enforcement agencies were able to secure funding to increase patrols on holiday and special event dates, and also to serve papers on the 2,400 citizens with outstanding DUI arrest warrants.

While the efforts of the local law enforcement agencies are to be applauded, I think we should also recognize the efforts of the Napa business community for their contributions.
The Napa Valley Register, by publicizing the names of DUI offenders, made its readers more aware of both the scope of the problem, but also the consequences of driving while over the limit.

Black Tie Taxi has added to the number of cabs available in downtown Napa, and the new three-wheel “Hoppers” cabs have served both locals and Napa visitors in our hotels.
Our own company, Flying Boar Tour and Travel, has made combating driving under the influence part of our mission statement. We have either donated a van and driver, or supplied one at cost, to crab feeds, Christmas parties and many of the other local events that make Napa the special place that it is. We are proud to think that we may have a very small part to play in making our streets safer for our neighbors.

" Hardly... Flying Boar Tour & Travel is said to have provided transport (free or packaged price) at high-imbibing events -- I think this bit of "advertising" is due! Leave it to someone to critique a good thing! "
