Napa police will be conducting a DUI checkpoint on Friday. They will also be checking motorists for valid driver’s licenses.

Although police have not released the exact location of the checkpoint, they said it will be within the city limits in an area that has seen a high number of collisions involving drunken drivers.
Police said the goal of the DUI checkpoint is to get unlicensed drivers off the road and arrest those who are driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs. The funding for DUI checkpoint comes from the California Office of Traffic Safety.

" I'd much rather have increased patrols than checkpoints.

But since the police have now said that the goal of the checkpoints " is to get unlicensed drivers off the road and " look for drunks, mayve we should call them "License, Insurance, and DUI" checks. We could call them "LID checkpoints". But maybe they figure those wouldn't sell so well. "

" They need to keep calling it a dui checkpoint because it would be unconstitutional to just stop people to see if they had a license. It still is unconstitutional, but for some reason the courts seem to allow it and the unlicensed are just a byproduct ... in giving up liberties to protect freedom we loose both... "

" I hear about uninsured or driving without a license all the time. I thought it was against the law to drive without insurance? Why wouldn't that be an opportune time to check for proof of insurance? "

" napalocal- how is it unconstitutional for a police officer to ask some one who is driving a car if they have a license? every one knows that driving is NOT a right. You MUST have a license to drive if not you are breaking the law and have every right to be ticketed or arrested. Chances are if they have no license they have no insurance either which again is against the law. I'd love to see more check points not only to get drunks off the road but to get those who are driving with out a license off the road. "

" napagirl - a police officer needs a reason to detain you, or pull you over, to see if you have a license. If your driving is fine, and you do not show any signs of intoxication, one should not have to show anything else, period. An officer cannot pull you over for no reason to see if you have a license, how is this any different??? It is an abuse of the power given to take drunks off the road. Why do you think they are always located in the same places... they catch nore people with out a license than over the legal limit... We all know where the checkpoints should be... the current locations produce results from people that wont complain... sad state we live in.. "

" i dont condone driving with out a license or insurance. I have both and expect the same from everyone else on the road, but I also dont think that an officer has the right to request proof of either because of the simple fact that you were driving down Lincoln... If one is pulled over for a legitimate reason then by all means ... impond the car, etc... whatever they do... That is the unconstitutional aspect that I was refering to... "

" napa local: how would you feel if this person with no license or insurance hit you or someone you loved? leaving you with a totaled car and tens of thousands of dollars in damage and hospital bills? heck, i would be mad if it was just $500 in damage. don't get me wrong i understand what you are saying, but at some point there needs to be accountability. in my opinion having an announced checkpoint is fair game. why should anyone doing something illegal have rights?
