Napa police will be conducting DUI saturation patrols on Friday within the city limits to get drunken drivers off the road.

The patrols will be in areas where there has been a high number of traffic crashes and arrests involving drunken drivers.
Napa police is attempting to cut down on collisions involving DUI drivers. Police suggest those who have been drinking and believe they need to get behind the wheel of a car to call a cab, a friend, take the bus or walk.

DUI saturation patrols are paid for by a grant received from the California Office of Traffic Safety through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
Correction: An earlier version of this article indicated in the headline therer were DUI chedkpoionts taking place.

" Go get 'em. Happy Hunting. Show 'em that Friday the 13th CAN be bad luck.

I am curious about how long we'll be able to get grants for this from the State of California, though. But until they stop funding grants, get 'em while you can. And afterwards, too.

I gueshh if I'm under the alfluence of inclohol, I'll just (hic) have to stay away from the limits of the city until Saturday. "

" They should put the checkpoints on the backroads such as Silverado Trail and Hagen rd. That is where the drunks are driving to avoid the other checkpoints. "

" Take a TAXI... If your gonna drink then plan ahead take a taxi there and then back. DAH..... Its alot cheaper then the DUI. Or hurting or killing someone or your self. "

" Walk??? are you kidding me, so they can then arrest you for a drunk in public. "

" The Police are telling us if we've had too much to drink, to walk.....So they can arrest us for drunk in public! Makes no sense to me!

And I see napagrl1960 is on the same page as me! "

" First of all a drunk in public would not carry the fines or consequences as a DUI! There are alternatives to driving drunk - stay sober (in Napa?), walk, ride a bike, take a taxi - ALL are cheaper than a DUI and, at most you risk hurting yourself not someone else.

Trolley Party Bus??? Why Not? "

" I thought the police didn't care about walking unless you were boisterous, yelling, causing a ruckus, or falling down drunk. Otherwise the almost defunct Chef's Market would have nailed hundreds of people. I'm pretty sure you have to be doing something pretty out of the ordinary to get public intox. (Can someone from the Napa PD chime in on this?) "

" It is interesting that NPD can't/won't arrest drunks unless they are paid extra (grant money)... If they won't protect and serve by doing their job on a daily basis, that's a red flag to look for corruption... The state has to grease their palm to get them to do their job...???

Claiming it costs more in overtime and equipment is lip service to the game they play to tap the slush fund for what ever they can get... "

" You should do random cell phone abuse patrols..Ugh I see at least 15 people over the course of a day on there phones, trying to be all crafty.. I got rear ended about a mo and 1/2 ago, by a person on their cell, and they did not even ticket this person.. What the french?? "

" Okay.....We increase patrols to cut down on illegal behavior. Illegal stuff happens all of the time around here, not just on weekends, or during the Super Bowl, etc. Seems like a scam to me. What the French? "

" They were out all over tonight. On my way home from Oakland tonight, I saw four cars pulled over, including one car that passed me as I was going over the Southern Crossing and then got pulled over by a CHP parked just over the crest.

Of course, I really wish they'd pulled over the van that changed lanes when I was alongside in Pinole. I don't know if they were drunk or on a cell phone. But cops sitting on the side of the road cherry-picking with radar aren't going to see the really dangerous drivers, just the ones going fast. The van that almost hit me was going the speed limit. So was I, until I had to slow down to keep from getting hit. "
