3:15 p.m.Napa police are planning extra DUI patrols Friday night within the city limits.

"The saturation patrols will be in an area where the City of Napa has experienced a high number of collisions because the driver was driving under the influence and in areas where a high number of DUI arrests have been made," notes Napa Police Sgt. Tom Pieper.
Pieper said the goal of the police patrols is to try and convince people drinking to avoid getting into a car and driving.

"Some alternatives to driving are to take a cab, take the city bus, walk, call a friend, use a designated driver or not drink at all," noted Pieper.
Nationally, about 3-in-10 people will be involved in an alcohol-related crash in their lifetime, according to Napa PD.

"In the City of Napa, this would amount to 22,500 residents involved in an alcohol related crash in their lifetime comparable to almost the total population of American Canyon, St. Helena and Calistoga combined," noted Pieper.
Funding for the DUI Saturation Patrols comes from a grant that the Napa Police Department received from the California Office of Traffic Safety through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration

" Last week we had a cab take us to a party, and a friend (that doesn't drink) take us home. Today, I got all of my things I had to do, done. Now I am sipping on a nice cold beer readin the NVR. "
