10 a.m.The Napa Police Department will be conducting DUI saturation patrols Friday evening.

The department does not release precise information on the location of the patrols, but targets areas where there have been a high number of collisions and DUI-related incidents.
Funding for the special patrols comes from the California Office of Traffic Safety through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

" Okay, anyone want to suggest a politically-correct, racially-correct area for the DUI checkpoints? "

" How about on Jefferson at G St? Right near the county DUI program. Kill 2 birds with one stone. "

" I think we shouldnt tell everyone that we are having one. Alot easier to get them, if they arnt expecting it! "

" These aren't checkpoints, these are patrols.

I personally would prefer that they have patrols rather than checkpoints, because I would think that they'd be more effective.

But in my cynical mind, it's possible that these patrols are more publicity than patrols. At least with checkpoints, you can actually see them. It would be too easy just to try to convince people that there are going to be cops all over the place in the hope that some people would get nervous and be scared into drinking and NOT driving.

Not that there's anything wrong with that..... "

" I would ike to see 2 or 3 overtime cops every night. Let the drunks pay there wage in fines. "

" How about Saturday afternoon on HWY 29 between Yountville and St. Helena?
Oh wait there won't be anyone driving after drinking there... "

" rick...that same whine happens every time they post a DUI patrol warning here. Please try to understand...it's all about jurisdiction and the Napa POLICE DEPARTMENT has none beyond the Napa CITY LIMITS.
CHP is responsible for traffic enforcement in the areas you mention and in conjunction with the Sheriff's Department aggressively seek DUI offenders routinely and also have saturation patrols on a regular basis.
This is about the Napa PD using state funds to put more cops on the street to keep you and I safer. I for one appreciate that. "

" Rick, just so you know, they already did that on a Saturday a few months back. They stopped 500 cars and only got three for DUI. It was what we can consider a total flop.

I love how people in this town try to find any way they can to hate on the one thing drives the Napa Valley's economy. Don't be mad just because you're not profiting from it. "

Wannabee wrote on Apr 17, 2009 8:26 PM:

" It just seems odd to me that the cops don't stop drunks without a "grant". They have a little profit center, where they get paid extra for doing their job? Once they know they can squeeze the state for the extra money, it becomes like an addiction.

They now won't come out to take a burglary report. They make you file on-line or go to the station.

"To protect and serve" is meaningless nowadays. "
