1 p.m.NapaValleyRegister.com publishes monthly statistics on arrests and convictions for driving under the influence — and so-called “wet reckless” convictions — in Napa County.

Arrest information is from the Napa County Sheriff’s Department. Convictions, names and blood-alcohol levels are from Napa County Superior Court.
Convictions include cases in which the person pleaded guilty or no contest to one or more drunk driving charges, or where one or more such charges resulted in a guilty verdict at trial.

Vehicle code violations considered are: driving under the influence (Vehicle Code section 23152), reckless driving while under the influence (23103.5) and causing injury to another while driving while under the influence (23153).
The blood-alcohol levels provided by the court are based on a variety of tests — some taken at the scene of the arrest or county jail, others through a later blood test — and have not necessarily been proven or admitted in court. It is unlawful for any person to operate a vehicle if that person has a blood-alcohol level of .08 or more, according to the California Vehicle Code.

Names listed below are those with convictions or pleas in April 2009.
Arrests: 114

Convictions/pleas: 95

Reported blood-alcohol below .10 or unavailable: 21

Reported blood-alcohol between .10 and .19: 55

Reported blood-alcohol between .20 and .29: 17

Reported blood-alcohol between .30 and .39: 2

What we need is a good old celeb name to appear to get things rolling. "

" The NVR's silence in reponse to my questions shows me that that I am probably right.

I was sorta hoping that somebody at the NVR could come up with SOME reason why they felt justified in doing what they do. But I guess there is some moral high ground in thumbing a newspaper's nose at decency.

We're gonna have some fun laughing about this at the party I go to tomorrow night. Speaking highly of the NVR, of course.

I'll make sure only the non-drivers are drinking. But it'll apparently be OK for the sober drivers to drive in two lanes at once while running red lights while talking on their cell phones and wandering into oncoming traffic.

What a joke this has become.

" A couple of weeks ago, my friend's 5-year old son was killed in a traffic accident because an apparently sober driver was more concerned about her cell phone than she was about cars stopped in front of her for a red light.

So, is the NVR really trying to make the roads safer ? They won't print my posts where I question their motives

More accidents are caused by distracted drivers than drivers that are DUI. Yet, the NVR publishes this list every day while ignoring the #1 cause of accidents. They ignore the opportunity to raise awareness about the dangers of driving-while-phoning, and I suspect it's because newspaper staff feel they have to talk on the phone while driving.

So what is it, NVR ? Are you going to print my question this time ? Are you going to think about trying to similarly shame all of the people who selfishly put other people's lives at risk ? Or do you want to only go after people who are driving impaired by alcohol ?

Or is driving while impaired OK if everyone does it ? Because I really think more people are driving while impaired by a phone than they are by alcohol, judging from what I see. Obviously, people are laughingly ignoring the new law forbidding driving while impaired by a cell phone, and it partially because the penalties are so weak.

This is a great opportunity for the NVR to actually make a difference, and it apparently isn't important enough.

Or would it be too much work to help save lives ? I don't get it. "
