This week, the Register published a note about the sighting of a mountain lion near Old Sonoma Road.

“Ahhhhhhhhh!!!!!!!” The sound of my husband’s deep-voiced yell of shock and surprise pulled me out of my reading reverie. And then he did it again, even longer and louder, “Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhh!” I jumped up from my dining room chair and headed to where my husband was standing in shock staring into the kids’ play area (what for most people is their den).

There are several streets around where I live that have recently been repaired by the city of Napa. Thank you, city of Napa! It is a big improvement for the local residents. Some of the streets repaired are: Sunrise Drive, Greco Drive, Elm Street, Pine Street, Devita Drive, Cypress Street and Hilltop Drive.

Independence Day comes around this weekend, and Napa will be flying its colors quite a bit more brightly this year, with a beefed-up Fourth of July parade and celebration on Saturday.

This month, the World Health Organization finally declared that the H1N1 virus has become pandemic. It reported a big jump in cases and fatalities since June 19. How many people this virus will sicken and kill depends, ultimately, on three things: the virus itself; the impact of what are known as non-pharmaceutical interventions; and the availability and effectiveness of a vaccine.

No matter how things turn out in Iran in the immediate future, a huge statement has been made by the Iranian people that they want more freedom, and my belief is that in the future we will see the manifestation of their courageous actions.

There was one big pothole on Highway 29 that I had driven over for years, I learned to look out for it every time I drove home, and there it would be. I could count on having to swerve around it. After a while I grew to like looking out for it, swerving on cue every time I went by.

Everyone has a person who influenced their lives above all others. Just about everyone I know can identify someone who has been instrumental in making them the person that they are -- from the grandpa who taught him how to ride a bike, to the elderly neighbor who taught her how to make really good brownies. We all have someone who has been a constant source of support, a good shoulder to cry on, and an endless supply of good advice.

Death will forever be the mistress of life, and Michael Jackson apparently chose to marry her to avoid a pasty-faced and less than stellar comeback tour.
