NoonCalFire crews gained the upper hand on a fast-moving grass fire that began Sunday evening. As of 7 a.m., today, firefighters gained full containment of the Steele Canyon Fire that burned 70 acres.

Fire crews will continue to labor throughout the day to mop up at the fire scene, CalFire Battalion Chief Barry Biermann said.
The fire began on the 9000 block of Steele Canyon Road, near Capell Valley Road, and was the result of a vehicle crash. A California Highway Patrol helicopter confirmed the fire had burned about an acre at 6:57 p.m.

Steep, hilly terrain provided a challenge for CalFire crews attempting to get into the fire zone and quell the flames.
“The biggest issue that we had was extremely huge slopes,” Biermann said. “The fire ran rapidly up the slope to the ridge point. Because it was so steep, it was difficult getting crews on the line. We were not able to use our bulldozers on a large majority of it. So we had to put hand crews on there.”

Firefighters also had to contend with hot weather and low humidity Biermann said. The fire drew 20 fire engines, six hand crews, four water tenders, and eight air tankers to the area to combat the flames.
No structures were reported lost to the flames and no evacuations were ordered in the area.

Biermann said the fire serves as a reminder that fire season is here and homeowners should make sure that a defensible space, clear of vegetation and debris, is around their homes.

Check back later in the day for more on this story.

" Thank you for the info. I saw the smoke when I was driving home east on Linclon just as I crossed Jefferson and thought I would check here before going to the cal fire web site. Now I dont have to take the extra web trip there! Keep us posted please "

" If anyone is looking for information on the fire in Napa, a great site to check out is www.Wildlandfire.com.. I have listed below a link to the steel canyon fire's forum board. You can also listen to any live dispatch at the incident as well.

Last I heard, it's roughly 40 + acres, but it sounds like Calfire is doing a heck of a job with it. "

" Here is a great link to a website that has constant updates. Much faster than waiting for the NVR to update and much less nuisance to the people working dispatch who have to take time out from emergency phone calls to answer questions from the public. Which brings me to my next point, do not call 9-1-1 to get fire info!! That is an emergency only number!!!! *steps off soapbox*

Anyways, on to the link

www.wildlandfire.com

Click on the HOTLIST button at the top and go to the inital attack forum which is the first listed. Anything starting with CA-LNU is the Sonoma-Lake-Napa area. Much more updated info there than on the news reporting sites. "

" Thanks for the info, folks. I'm away from home and my husband called to tell me about it -- not far from where we live. He's asleep now; I'm in another part of the world, and I'll check the website you cited to find out what's happening.

I so appreciate the NVR and the people who submit comments. "

" Thank you CDF!! You did a awsome job, and kept our homes and families safe. You all worked through the night and were still there this morning in passing. It was way too close. I heard it was caused by another car accident on the steep grade to Steele Park. Hope the people made it out. This is another reason to slow down on these roads, even us locals. Very humbling. "

" As soon as I done my second daily walk here in Fairfield, I saw the funky, junky, not-so-spunky smoke. I thought this would be burning for x-amount of days. But I'm glad that it was put out. great job by the CalFire crew. By the way, is everyone ready for our new drought breaker this winter? El Nino is back! "

" Yeah it is always nice to see that the register leaves out the local volunteer fire departments when giving credit to jobs being done. "
