A man drowned in Lake Berryessa Tuesday, the second death at the lake in as many days.

Fairfield resident Tyron Jenkins, 26, was swimming to an island from Acorn Beach at about 3 p.m., according to Napa County Sheriff’s Sgt. Doug Pace.
He was about 40 yards off the shore when he began struggling. Two female friends he was with tried to help him, but he began pulling them down.

He disappeared under the water and never resurfaced, Pace said.
Sheriff’s Office boat and land units responded and called the county’s dive team.

The team found Jenkin’s body at about 5 p.m. in eight to 15 feet of water off the south end of the beach, Undersheriff John Robertson said.
He was taken to the Sheriff’s Office for an autopsy, he said.

Dive team members found Jenkins’ body within about 15 minutes of beginning their search because of a good description of where Jenkins went under from the women  and the dive team’s thorough training, Pace said.

“That’s why we train here, just for this reason,” he said. “It’s a popular place for bad things to happen.”

Jenkins’ death comes only a day after a 23-year-old Guatemalan man drowned while swimming in the Foxtail Flat area of the lake.

Jonatan Najera was also swimming to an island at the time. He and his cousin were about 20 yards offshore when he began to go under.

His cousin attempted to help, but lost grip on Najera.

Alcohol isn’t suspected to have contributed to either drowning, though the office will conduct toxicology tests in both cases, Pace said.

Jenkins’ death is the fifth drowning in Lake Berryessa so far this year.

Pace warned swimmers to wear life jackets and avoid alcohol while swimming.

“If you wear life jackets, this is not going to happen,” he said.

" Learn to swim, wear a life jacket or just stay the heck out of the water! "

" I know the story says alcohol doesn't seem to be a factor, but it should be illegal to swim while intoxicated. Sounds like fun at the time, but not when it's one of your friends that die. "

" Acorn Beach and Foxtail Flat are both in Oak Shores Park, Reclamation managed free day use area. It is very unfortunate that these young men drown. The percentage of deaths to the visitation is enormous now, in contrast to when the resorts were open and there was high visitation. Boaters and recreation users, who were the land and water stewards, have been forced off the lake by the lack of accommodations and services.
FYI - the BOR campground run at Oak Shores with 100 campsites had no shower facilities for the public. Public use is now a public catastrophe. "

" Where exactly are people going to get a life jacket for the day? No one's going to go out and buy one for $50. to spend a day at the lake. Good idea though; maybe there could be a kiosk at the beach with rentals? Waterworld gives out life jackets to all its customers if they want one. "

" FROGGIE1559 have you ever been to Lake Berryessa? They DO rent life jackets. Actually you dont even have to pay for it, all you do is let them hold on to your ID and they loan you a life jacket! "

" Froggie1559, they loan them for free at Oak Shores. The ranger offered them to us last weekend. (We had our own.) "

" My Dad drove us crazy when we were young, he would not let us swim until at least a full hour after we had eaten. He said we needed that much time to digest our food and make sure we did not get cramps when in the water.

I wonder if these swimmers were failing to heed this old rule, plus the fact that alcohol dehydrates you making cramps even more likely in cold water.
We all know the crippling pain of a cramp, you could not swim with it.

Maybe these folks did not drink alcohol at all, but cramps can happen to anyone and long swims in this lake maybe need a life vest for simple safety.
My sincere sympathies to the families affected by these sad losses. "

" It’s sad when people lose their lives especially in a preventable tragedy. Hopefully people will read this article and take water safety more seriously. The Department of Boating and Waterways is spreading this message in the hopes that people will take time to put on a life a jacket and leave alcohol off the boat. Their website has a lot of useful information: http://bit.ly/uZ3ZA. "
