Unopened St. Helena skatepark already drawing a crowd
An unidentified youth crawls under a fence to check out the unfinished skatepark at Crane Park last Friday night. The skatepark won’t officially open for at least a few weeks, but the fences haven’t deterred curious skaters. /Jesse Duarte, St. Helena Star photo | Buy photos

1 p.m.Fencing around the area and construction still taking place is not deterring some skateboarding enthusiasts from trying to test out St. Helena's new skatepark.

The Crane Park facility is not open to the public, but the St. Helena Star reports in today's edition that police have found as many as 30 people testing out the skatepark, only to have to send them on their way because the park is not redy to open ... yet.

" I certainly hope they were arrested for trespassing. This is what gives skateboarders a bad reputation and makes them dangerous - they think they are above the law and rule the road. "

" Though I'm not a skater this skate park is totally awesome! You gotta check it out! The only thing I don't like about it is that they put it in the middle of Crane Park. That's kinda weird! "

" One of my favorite things to do is check out the St. Helena police log every week, so I've seen all the reports of people using the unfinished skate park. Sounds like it happens a lot.

By the way, I highly recommend the St. Helena Police Log each week in the St. Helena Star to anyone looking for a good laugh. The minor things people report to the St. Helena police amuses me. "

" FarmGirl:
People like YOU are the reason these people go to such great lengths to have some fun in a valley built for one thing: tourism.

Also, the skatepark is finished. They just won't take the fence down because they aren't done with their precious "landscaping."

It was scheduled to open at the end of June, FYI. Good job St. Helena! Really chose the right contract for that job didn't you? "

" While i am beyond my skateboarding years i must say this is a really nice skate park and i for one and happy that kids are excited about the park and want to use it. One of the reasons the park was developed was a location to skate that is away from public traffic. Would you prefer that the park opened and nobody showed up. Pull that fence down and let those kids skate. It's healthy active and it gets them out of the couch and away from the computer unlike the rest of us! "

" These kids should be cited for trespassing. Teach these skater kids to have respect for rules "
