3:00 p.m.A man suspected of  robbing an American Canyon bank in August was arrested Monday afternoon in Washington., D.C.

American Canyon resident Marcel Jones, 22, had checked into a Washington hotel under another person’s name, according to Napa County Sheriff’s Office Detective Chris Carlisle.
There was no indication Jones was attempting to flee the country and he was arrrested without incident, Carlisle said.

“I think he was just hiding out there, just getting away from this area,” Carlisle said.
Jones is believed to be the man who walked into the WestAmerica Bank branch in American Canyon Aug. 24, handed a teller a note that demanded money and then fled on foot. Police believe Jones went on to rob another bank in Sacramento Sept. 2.

Sacramento Police Department officials contacted Napa investigators when they found the robbery at the River City Bank on K Street had similarities to the one in American Canyon.
A witness of the Sacramento bank robbery recognized Jones and was able to identify him to investigators.

Napa County Sheriff’s Office investigators then received a tip that Jones was in a hotel in Washington, D.C., said Tracey Stuart, spokeswoman for the office.

They contacted members of the Regional Capitol Area Fugitive Task Force, who found Jones at the hotel Monday afternoon and took him into custody.

Investigators believe Jones had friends in the D.C. area, Carlisle said.

Jones is being held on $250,000 bail in Washington, D.C.

Carlisle was unsure if Jones had any of the stolen money in his possession.

“We don’t expect to get any of the actual money back,” he said.

The next step is to extradite Jones back to California. Should he waive his right to go before a judge in Washington, D.C., he could be brought back right away.

Otherwise the process could take some time. Carlisle believes Jones will be back in Napa County within a couple weeks, maybe sooner.

The Napa County District Attorney’s Office will review the details of the case to determine how he would be charged.

Jones grew up in Napa County and attended Vintage High School. He was living as a transient, however, during the time of the robberies, officials have said.

Jones’ arrest brings closure to the case, Carlisle said.

“It’s good for the community,” he said. “It makes it safer for everyone.”

" Isn't Tracy Stuart a Captain at the Sheriff's Department? Article makes it sound like she's just a PR lady. I'm wondering how a guy who was robbing banks in California runs to DC to hide? I wonder how much of his stolen cash went to paying for the airfare? "
