7 p.m.A Napa man collapsed and died while participating in a charitable walk-run Saturday along the Napa River Trail.

James Schwab, 62, of Napa suffered a heart attack or related malady shortly after 9 a.m. while participating with friends and family in the Napa River Rock and Stroll, a fundraiser for Cope Family Center in Napa.
Paramedics from Napa Fire Station number four, located just a short distance from where Schwab fell, responded and paramedics attempted CPR.

Cope Executive Director Joelle Gallagher, who was among the crew supervising the event, said Schwab fell a short distance from the First Aid station set up for the event, near the spot where the river trail passes under the Imola Avenue bridge.
“A nurse walking next to him started CPR immediately,” she said. “He received immediate medical attention and in a very short period of time the ambulance came over.”

Schwab was taken to the Queen of the Valley Medical Center, where Napa Police say he was pronounced dead.
“I don’t think he was walking quickly and he was in good spirits,” said Gallagher. “He had a good friend walking with him.”

Gallagher knew Schwab, whose wife, Lee Schwab, is active with the charitable organization and several others around Napa.

Lee Schwab, Gallagher said, “is part of the Cope family. She’s been an incredible supporter and advocate for Cope, and James as well. He’s helped with many of our events and as a volunteer. They are a wonderfully supportive couple and we offer her the greatest sympathy. We will be there for her.”

" I want to say my prayers are with Mr.Schwab's Family. I also want to say Thank you to that nurse I was there and she worked very hard along with a few other people to help him. She jumped right into action to help her fellow man. "

" A man with such a giving heart should not have had a heart attack. He was the most intelligent, caring, giving man that I have ever know. He will be so missed by all who met him, worked with him and were lucky enough have been his friend. Our prayers go out to Lee and his extended family. James, be at peace! "

" I cherish the times we shared together - whether it was riding to work in his Ferrari or to a far away project in an airplane, discussing a far out idea in his office or getting our hands dirty playing with some new contraption behind the shop. He was a truly great man, and I will miss him. To Lee, I send you my deepest sympathies. "
