American Canyon High's new mascot is ... the wolf

The wolf has replaced the phoenix as the American Canyon High School mascot, after a decision at Thursday evening’s meeting of the Napa Valley Unified School District board of trustees.

The change follows concerns about the phoenix’s similarity to a bird-like symbol that police say is adopted by gangs.
Mark Brewer, the principal of the high school that will open its doors next fall, told the school board Thursday that replacing the phoenix was a must, even though there were “great intentions” surrounding earlier plans.

“This is something you want to get right. (It) is forever,” he said, adding that final decisions about the school’s mascot and colors will help to set the culture and tone of the campus.
Brewer noted that American Canyon Police Chief Brian Banducci recently said he approved of the school’s new mascot and colors, putting any fears about both to rest.

Students voted for the wolf over two other options, the golden eagle and the falcon. Input from current ninth-graders at Vintage High School and students at American Canyon Middle School, who will be the first to enroll at the school, was factored into the decision.
Renditions of the mascot will appear in the school’s gym, on the aquatic center’s building face, the soccer field and other areas, Don Evans, the district’s director of school planning and construction, said.

Architect Mark Quattrocchi, who designed the new campus, is donating one of his staff artists’ time to create the newest rendition of the mascot. The mascot is still in the design phase, according to Brewer.

As for the high school’s colors, gold — also part of the color schemes at Napa and Vintage high schools — is here to stay. Black, however, is replacing emerald green as the American Canyon High’s other primary color. Green and white will be used as accent colors at the school, Brewer said.

District Trustee Jose Hurtado moved to approve the color and mascot revisions on Thursday, and support was unanimous.

Brewer said the new campus is being billed as a “21st century high school” that will feature cutting-edge technology and a diverse curriculum.

Forgoing the traditional idea of having separate booster clubs for each sport at the school, he added, parents and supporters are forming a single, school-wide booster organization to financially support music, drama, athletics, activities, clubs and academics.

" While I am fine with the wolf as a mascot I'm irritated that we have let gangs of hood rats rule what our kids can use as a mascot, or wear on clothing. My 15 yr old son was told by the admin at Vintage that he can't wear a t-shirt that advertises a heavy metal rock band, Insane Clown Posse, known as ICP, because a local group of gangbangers is now calling themselves ICP.
I think we are giving the gangs too much influence over whats acceptable for the rest of the youth.
If a group of gang members all of a sudden decides to wear shirts with US flags on them, the "Old Red, White and Blue", are the rest of us going to have to stop showing our patriotism because we could be labeled as part of a gang?
I think it's pretty sad that we have to worry about our kids not wearing 'red' in a "Blue" neighborhood, or visa versa, but now they can't wear a fan t-shirt either in fear of being labeled. "

" Students were told they get to pick the mascot and the colors. They chose the the Phoenix as the mascot and Black and Red as the colors.

So what are colors and mascot? The wolf and Gold and Black with Green and White.

Great way to build trust between the students and adminstration at a new school "

" While I understand the frustration people having about kids not wearing gang colors etc. play out this scenario.

The schools let the kids wear whatever they want (like at my highschool) and your child wears clothing gang members find offending (red, blue etc.) and shoot your kid for it (again, happened at my school). Then you would be blaming the school for not informing the parents that these are gang colors and asking the school why on earth would you not tell us and let children wear that to school if you knew it was dangerous? Having the knowledge and not acting on it can make the schools liable. Do you think they have money for lawsuits when they cannot afford books? I would rather be frustrated and have to explain to my child rather than attend his funeral because he wore a certain color shirt. We can't legally shoot gang members on site, so until we can this is probably the best option. "

" It is disheartening that the bad an spoil the good; at least the wolf is a strong symbol.

What is the explanation for the color change (wolfs are often shades of gray)?

In regards to the nation's colors...

"it's pretty sad that we have to worry about...not wearing 'red' in a "Blue" neighborhood, or visa versa..."

...in some instances, it is the adults who have mimicked the "gangs" (at public forums regarding healthcare); have you noticed the rude behavior of some who claim they care patriotic? "

" Isn't there a gang in California that uses wolves as their symbol ? "

" I think keeping the phoenix would have been a great way to neutralize that symbol -- Take back the phoenix!

On the other hand, wolves are good. There was a possibility there to honor our local fauna -- coyotes? I suppose that has a bad connotation though.

So, bring back the wolves! (I just watched the Ken Burns National Parks series.)

I'm glad some of the middle school students got to weigh in too. "

" grmp29; it would be really confusing with the school being named after the football league. i personally don't like anything and a lot of people i talk to say they have no interest in going to the school because of the changes. they wasted our time by having us vote back in may. they didn't even use our suggestions.
