A Napa man was arrested on suspicion of felony drunk driving after he struck a pedestrian with his vehicle in Yountville.

Richard Donnan Beard, 41, was turning from westbound Oak Circle onto southbound Washington Street.
He hit a 41-year-old North Carolina woman in the crosswalk police said. She was taken to Queen of the Valley Medical Center with a broken wrist. Beard was booked onto the Napa County Department of Corrections.

" Why did they make alcohol legal anyway? With over 350 wineries in Napa Valley alone who is really at fault here? Napa wants the revenue these wineries supply, the cops get money on tickets for the drunk driving charges, so is this a win win for the City of Napa? If they go through a red light that is more revenue. Eliminate the source much like guns and then we won't have these problems. Why do we need that amount of wineries in Napa County? Ask yourself that question!! Who's benefitting here? "

" "Piquemyinterest": Ban alcohol and guns? Don't they teach about the Prohibition era in schools? Booze and machine guns were plentiful. Please start blaming the people, not the alcohol, guns, drugs, red lights, police,
whatever. "

" Piquemyinterest:

I'm thinking they should completely shut down the cell phone companies. Some people don't follow the law and talk on the cell while they drive. This is very dangerous, so why not get rid of cell phones all together? Guns, wineries, and cell phones all kill people. "

" piquemyinterest- It's not the alcohol in and of itself that's the problem... it's how people use it that's the problem. It is the fault of whoever drinks too much thus getting a DUI. That's why people need to drink responsibly. Obviously this guy in the article was not. And we don't even know if it was wine that he had been drinking, anyway. Why did you apparently think it was (if you didn't, I apologize; but in my defense, you kind of implied it from your mentioning of the wineries in Napa). "

" Piquemyinterest- by the logic you provide, the same could be said about cars (or nearly anything for that matter). Afterall, this guy was driving a car and there are many, many cars in the Napa Valley. If we eliminate the 'source', we won't have any vehicle accidents.

Drinking alcohol, like driving, most people do very responsibly. If you have an issue with alcohol, Texas still has dry counties, and Utah has their version of near-beer.

And, I don't think the City of Napa has anything to do with this accident...it was in Yountville. "

" "Piquemyinterest" - maybe we should eliminate cars also, and go back to the horse and buggy days? Eliminating wineries will not stop drunk driving, so why bring up the wineries?

I didn't read anywhere in the article about the alledged drunk driver leaving from a winery. "

" Piquemyinterest:

Do you have prescription medications in the medicine cabinet? (Why is called a medicine cabinet?) How about Tylenol? Advil? What are they for? Do you use them? They are very dangerous and FAR more addictive than alcohol. So the next time you pop a couple of pain pills and jump in the car, talk on the phone and apply make up to run a few errands; remember that you are under the influence of a foreign subject and can be considered DUI. By the way, get off the phone and put your make up on at home...

Be careful what you ask for. You might end up putting us all on lock down. I for one am not giving up my gun, alcohol, or any of my other freedoms... "

" Piquemyinterest makes a good point. and of course it seems to soar over the heads of many of Napa's finest minds!

Napa has a completely hypocritical view on alcohol. if your a kid alcohol is bad. don't drink and drive. alcoholics are bad. bad bad bad!

unless its making us money! alcohol in restaurant good! wineries good! revenue from wine good! what a town we live in ineed! "

Piquemyinterest's point, which obviously flew over your head, is that people are not responsible for their actions. If you do something wrong, you can always blame somebody or something else. Wineries and guns don't kill people... stupidity kills people. "

" What I dont understand is why the government allows some dangerous drugs to be legal and others illegal? Thousands die every year directly from alcohol related issues. Yet 10 years ago the government banned Ephedra which was used as a weight loss product because 30 people died using it, irresponsilbly i must add. Why was this deemed illegal, but alcohol remains legal? The hypocracy in this country is unreal. "

" On the DUI post there was quite a debate about DUI being a victimless crime. Hah! I'm glad it was only a broken wrist. Hope you have a speedy recovery. We need to be careful even in crosswalks. "

BilLy wrote on Oct 15, 2009 3:18 PM:

" Do they check for other drugs when something like this happens or just alcohol? I am glad she is ok and I am sure the guy did not intend to do this but drinking and driving is an absolute NO-NO "

" To old time napkin,
As far as i can tell Meth is still being made, so obviously banning ephedra didn't solve that problem or even put a dent in it. And from what I understand meth is made from many different items, including everyday household items. Don't really see the argument "
