Downtown Napa will go all out for the holidays

Defying the Grinch-like pall on the economy, downtown Napa will turn itself into a brilliantly lit fantasy land this holiday season.

Downtown property owners are paying to string more than three miles of lights across rooftops, trees, bridges and the new river promenade. Ribbons of white light will tie together the heart of downtown along First and Main streets with the Oxbow District east of Soscol Avenue.
“We’re never done anything like this,” Craig Smith, executive director of the Napa Downtown Association, said Tuesday.

Businesses are spending $125,000 for the purchase and installation of the LED lights, which generate a lot of sparkle without needing a lot of electricity, Smith said. The money comes from the annual assessments paid by commercial property owners to promote downtown.
Yes, the economy isn’t the best, but there is much to celebrate, Jeff Doran, chairman of downtown’s Property-Based Improvement District, said. Much of the riverfront has been reconstructed, major commercial projects are complete and flood protection work is done on all the major motor vehicle bridges, he said.

“Lights symbolize hope,” Doran said. “Hopefully it becomes symbolic of good years to come.”
Merchants hired Sierra Display of Fresno, a company that specializes in community lighting, to begin installing the lights two weeks ago, Smith said. The job will continue for some weeks to come.

The lights will be turned on at a public ceremony Nov. 25 at 6 p.m. at Veterans Memorial Park. The event’s centerpiece will be the illumination of a 29-foot Christmas tree.

Downtown hasn’t attempted a holiday tree for five or six years. Merchants gave up after small trees at Dwight Murray Plaza were vandalized, Smith said.

Downtown property owners decided it was time to try again, but this time do a big tree that residents could rally around, Smith said. “We’re tired of being bah-humbug. We have to have faith in people.”

Faith in humanity will be enhanced by video cameras, Doran said.

Over the past four years, downtown has spent PBID funds on such events as the Chefs Market, the Cajun Festival and the launch of the summer car show, Smith said.

In deciding to light up downtown in a big way, merchants asked themselves, “What could we do at Christmas that could really have an impact, to make people want to come downtown, to put them in the spirit?” Smith said.

“Obviously we hope this will attract people to downtown who will, in turn, shop,” Smith said.

The $125,000 price tag includes two years of maintenance by Sierra Display, which will take down most of the lights after the holidays and reinstall them in 2010, Smith said.

Until now, Yountville’s Festival of Lights has been the brightest star in the Napa Valley’s holiday makeover, Doran said. Downtown Napa’s new ribbons of lights should compare favorably, he said.

" Who's gonna see these lights? Who goes to Downtown Napa?? Will lights bring a more diverse offering of shops and restaurant options -- or will it simply make it a more favorable spot for tourists looking for a tasting room? "

" Lights symbolize hope? I think its ok that they are going all out, but I am still unemployed. I might take me kid downtown to walk around but I have no money for shopping or presents. The magnificent Kohls is more expensive than I thought it would be, so its back to Target. Unless you want to get surreal and go to Walmart; thats a trip down the rabbit hole.
Thanks for the effort downtown, best of luck to you. "

" Sounds like it will look beautiful! Now if I would only have a reason to go downtown for the holidays. Too bad Target is not down town!

I do remember when I was a kid and downtown did have things called stores that were open to shop in. They would all decorate and have sidewalk sales, and huge events to bring people downtown. Oh and the rest of the year they had bed races, break dancing competitions, and other events for the community. This is much different then over the past years when all the events have become expensive and aimed towards tourists. I am surprised they are not charging admission to down town yet. "

" Sounds great. Too bad the lights will only be drawing attention to all of George Altamura’s empty, run-down properties. "

" Thanks downtown merchants. We need something to lift our spirits this holiday season in these hard economic times. "

" wonderful! this is so nice to look forward too. Just driving through will make one feel better. You don't have to shop- and yes the shops will stay open past five.
Downtown is getting better everyday!! love it! "

" Just curious, Which "run-down, empty" properties are Altumura's (honestly, i don't know). anyone? thanks. "

" If I'm not mistaken, George owns every single empty, run-down property downtown, along First St., including the Uptown (which isn't run-down anymore, but has been empty for more years than I can remember). The rule of thumb is, if the building is empty, George owns it. Anyone? "

" Exciting news! Even though Napa Downtown still needs a lot of work(more retailers and reasons to shop), this is a step in the right direction (especially during the winter season when trees have lost their leaves and the weather usually isn't great). It will look so much more appealing. It is amazing what a string of lights will do! Good itea! "

" I think it's a great effort on behalf of the city. I see the problem with shops being closed and it really is too bad that almost everything downtown is geared towards tourists. I understand they help our economy but it's a shame that the people that work in the community can not enjoy things that they work so hard to support. We need to get back to community and less tourists attractions and more family attractions. "

" Well, I'm certain Altamura owns the Town Center which is probably as vacant as it has ever been. I believe he also owns many storefronts along First Street. Some of those buildings had been vacant before Altamura aquired them and others after Altamura owned the property. My biggest complaint is that until recently, he didn't seem to be making the effort to attract businesses. Only recently did we start seeing "For Lease" signs on his empty buildings. "

amazed wrote on Oct 16, 2009 9:24 AM:

" This sounds great, but I hope it's part of a larger plan, like scheduling some children's choirs to sing carols, maybe a small craft fair in the Town Center, or a shop-till-you-drop night when the stores are open late. Lights alone won't bring people downtown. And something's got to be done with the windows in the vacant shops. During the Cajun Festival, I couldn't help but think we were having a party on the streets of a ghost town. "

" This makes me smile. It has been nice this summer having a real centerpiece to the town with all the activities going on downtown. I was slightly disappointed to see the last Napa City Lights come and go. I hope this will bring more of that energy.

I am cautiously optimistic at the advances that have been made this year. All we can do is support our local businesses. Promote our downtown and appreciate what we have. "

" I've said it before and I'll say it again and again and again: Napa downtown will only have a life when, somehow, WHATEVER it takes, the dead space between Dwight Murray Plaza and the Buckhorn is a generous public walkway with display windows for Kohls, etc.
The loading dock that is there now is a giant blood clot for the lifeblood of downtown, a feng shui DISASTER that forces shoppers to a narrow section of First Street. Open this up and, voila, we can all breathe in prosperity for our city. "

DOWNTOWN.

yay.

I'd be a lot more likely to go downtown if it didn't need continual hype, propping up, promoting, etc.

I'm going to go look in a San Francisco paper and see if THEIR downtown needs as much help from the papers. "

" I think this is a great idea. We are so lucky to have a quaint downtown that allows a casual stroll to enjoy the lights. I hope Napa downtown will develop the kind of atmosphere that will also bring businesses that locals and tourists alike will be able to patronize while enjoying the holiday lights. "

" As others have said in different words, all the lights in the world won't help downtown business during the holiday season if would-be shoppers flock there only to find all the shops closed in the evenings, like they have been during the Christmas season for many, many years. When the merchants decide to keep their stores open after 5:00 so people can shop after work and it's no longer a tomb downtown at night, shoppers will come and they will buy - lights or no lights. "

" I think it would be great to have an outdoor ice skating area. Maybe, close a street down for a few weeks to do it. If nothing else, it could help to get everyone into the spirit a little more. It's been a really tough year and a little taste of a White Christmas might be something to look forward to. Maybe we could even have a Winter Wonderland theme for the kids, with snowballs and all. They do that in Marin, they make snow for the kids to play in. "
