Law enforcement agencies will be out in full force on Halloween, patrolling for those driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol.

Starting at 7 p.m., officers participating in Napa County’s Avoid the 9 will deploy extra officers on overtime.
Avoid the 9 is a campaign that nine law enforcement agencies in Napa County have joined in order to fight drunk driving.

The California Office of Traffic Safety is providing the funding through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
Officers working regular shifts Saturday will also be looking for impaired drivers.

Law enforcement agencies ask residents to plan for a safe trip home before going out. Those planning on drinking should designate a driver, take public transportation or prepare to call a cab by having phone numbers and cab fare with them when they go out.

" We definitely need this -- especially when Halloween's on a weekend. LOTS of people drive home drunk after Halloween parties -- or BETWEEN Halloween parties -- so dangerous. "

" Nothing like a little overtime pay. You know those impaired tourist will be out in force after 7 p.m. on a Sunday. "

" realitybites: Halloween is on Saturday this year. I'm glad to see the added patrols. If it keeps anyone off the road after drinking, then it's worth it. Good job. "

" I've mentioned this before, how about running public transportation a little llater, especially to and from the downtown area?? "

" My bad - Halloween is Saturday. Not sure it makes a difference though - these high priced overtime employees won't be targeting tourists anyway. Pretty obvious why the state is broke. I don't feel "safer". Where are the roaming cell phone patrols? Surely on Halloween there will be plenty of cell phone drivers out there. "

" oh no how will we tell if they are real cops or just someone's Halloween costume? "

" I remember last Halloween when a car plowed through the foothill church. Or was that two years ago? "

" That would be a great Halloween idea, rickw. Get a group of people and have them all dress up as police officers. They can cone off a major road and ask people for their drivers licenses and if they have been drinking.

I would find it amusing, but I would not suggest doing it. "

I'm not aware of anyone ever criticizing the patrols. It's the unconstitutional checkpoints that are controversial. "

" I'm wondering what will be done about the underage-drinking parties. You know, the ones "everyone" is going to because the parents are oblivious and there are no consequences. If we become aware of such a party, whom do we notify? Call 911? Anonymously text to the "tip hotline" number? I'm sorta serious here. I don't want to read about dead teenagers on November 1. "

" Napagrrl--
Just call the police and tell them you're aware of underage drinking and give them the details.
Voila! "

" I would think a Saturday Halloween DUI awareness in Law Enforcement is pretty much a No_Brainer.

Especially because it'll be one of them moons that are bad, or when a black-cat walks under a ladder, or something. "

larrysbird wrote on Oct 28, 2009 10:30 PM:

" John-there have been many comments labeling the checkpoints as an attempt at racial profiling because people get stopped for driving without licenses or insurance as well. I am glad the police are doing their job, overtime or not. Its a tough, dangerous job and I dont think they deserve any criticism for it. "

realitybites wrote on Oct 29, 2009 11:48 AM:

" Police chose to be police - like they didn't know it was "tough and dangeous". I agree with reason-ator on this one - you'd think they wouldn't need overtime pay when you couldn't have scheduled officers to work in advance. "
