A plane was damaged after it ran off the runway Thursday night at the Angwin Airport.

At about 7:30 p.m., Lee Mize was preparing to take off in a small plane, according to the Napa County Sheriff's Office.
His microphone was set on the wrong channel, the office said. The correct channel automatically turns the runway lights on.

Mize attempted to take off in the direction he thought the runway was going, but drove into a field instead, the office said. The plane hit a rock and a fence, spinning out and causing major damage.
Neither Mize nor is wife, who was a passenger in the plane, were injured. The Federal Aviation Administration was called to investigate.

" While I don't know what happened here, as a pilot, I see at least two glaring mistakes, and likely more. "

" I don't know what happened either, but as a person who is on the ground and subject to what falls out of the air; yet another light aircraft bungle makes me concerned.

I am not a pilot, but I have flown in some of these aircraft, and I do know there is such a thing as a safety check and confirming corrrect radio contacts BEFORE you rumble down the runway.

It is a little worrisome to think of how many folk have pilot's licenses nowadays, and how they just hop into their craft and take off as if it were a pickup truck. "

" Hey guys, the runway is in the total opposite direction. And the frequency is pretty easy to remember. It's 123.0 And um, WHAT was he doing trying to take off without lights? Hmmmm....maybe there should be a drug test. He's lucky he hit just a fence and a rock and not a tree and the cliff!! "
