Colin MacPhail is a wine industry consultant and adviser with VINFABULA Partners, which was founded in July of 2015.

The company’s work includes “whole operation” consulting, “but we specialize in winery evaluations, and particularly in onsite customized staff and sales training,” wrote MacPhail.

2. What job would you like to try/not try?

Try: Custom perfumer & distiller.

Not try: Planning commissioner.

3. What was your first job?

Ship’s steward. Mainland Scotland to Orkney Islands ferry route.

4. What’s the worst job you ever had?

Pig farmer – they are fearsome and the smell never quite leaves you.

5. What is the biggest challenge the wine industry has faced?

In this area, changing from a wine industry to an experience industry and saturation.

6. Who do you most admire in the business world?

Scottish photojournalist and photographer Gunnie Moberg. She once was asked in one of these questionnaires for the local paper what the “most overrated virtue” was.

She said, “Success, because it is usually perceived as one.”

Best answer ever.

7. If you could change one thing about the wine industry, what would it be?

Give wine sales staff more credit, more craft and more money.

8. What’s something people might be surprised to know about you?

I have a recreational cleaning habit.

9. What was your childhood ambition?

To make my father laugh by telling a very good topical story.

10. If you could be anywhere right now, where would you be?

You have to first truly want to be where you are now – after that—Warbeth Beach in the Orkney Islands, Scotland.
