One talented woman…
Marie Lyall, owner of Marie Lyall Shoes for him and her, at 710 Main St. in the Riverfront Building, learned to sew in the fourth grade.
At 14, even before she had a workers permit, she was hired as a seamstress for a women’s junior apparel store in Sebastopol.
To say she did well is an understatement – she was promoted to store buyer at 16. When the owner wanted to retire four years later, she went to Lyall first, and asked if she wanted to buy the business. Heady stuff for a 20-year-old.
Financially, buying the store was out of Lyall’s reach at that time. However, she had the knowledge and experience to open her own business. In fact, retail comes easily to Lyall, who understands fashion, what customers want, and the importance of superior customer service.
Her designer apparel store “Sheque” opened in 1980. Seven years later and based on the success of her business, a developer recruited her for Montgomery Village, an upscale shopping mall in Santa Rosa.
Lyall left the retail business to stay home and raise her daughter. Being at home gave her the opportunity to focus on her second passion, interior design, and she built Creative Concepts and Designs, which she still operates.
When Helen , and later Scott Lyall, opened businesses in the Riverfront Building, Marie designed both spaces. Doing so rekindled her retail interests.
Then Lyall jumped right back in and Marie Lyall Shoes was born. The store opened in August 2013 and has been a success from the beginning.
Marie Lyall Shoes offers an array of footwear for men and women from well-known designers as well as unique artisans.
Labels include Aquatalia, Robert Zur, Johnston & Murphy, Donald Pliner and Samuel Hubbard. Rising stars in the world of shoes like Aska and Huma Blanco are also represented. Lyall offers a variety of prices.
For a people person like Lyall, retail comes naturally.
“I enjoy everybody that walks through the door,” she said. “It’s fun to go to work.”
She is constantly complimented on the store’s aesthetics, quality of mix, the comfort ability of the shoes and the warm welcome all receive. Lyall wouldn’t have it any other way.
“A majority of our customers are locals. We treat them like friends because they are.”
