What a great month we have had in February! I was delighted with some warmer than average temps which allowed for a lot of fun hikes, runs, and trips on the trail. We also had great weather for our first ever cemetery event (“Great Love Stories of Calistoga” held on Valentine’s Day in Pioneer Cemetery), which went off without a hitch. We cannot wait to plan more of those! As we try to introduce new programs to the community, we are always excited when people are excited about the new programs. And we are not stopping at cemetery tours. With a large constituent of young ladies playing volleyball in Calistoga, we thought it was a great opportunity to create a recreational volleyball program. St. Helena has been offering this program for a couple years, so it will be fun to join their league and have some friendly competition. As a female athlete, I am always excited to see girls participating in sports and athletics; and even more excited to offer this type of stuff.
Setting off April 9, the girls will have the opportunity to learn basic skills like: serving, passing, setting (now you get the pun). Additionally, they will be able to put these skills into real practice in game like situations, with scrimmages/games against St. Helena. Even if your child has no volleyball experience this is an excellent opportunity to learn a new sport, new skills, and the values of team work. We are offering two age groups: Under 11 and Under 14. The season will run from April 9-May 30, with practices on Mondays and games Wednesdays, time TBD . The cost is $70, and we do have scholarships available.
We are looking for some volunteer coaches, so if you’ve played volleyball or are familiar with the game and love to work with kids, we want you to come join our volunteer force! For more information about the program or volunteering, contact the Recreation Department at 942-2838.
