Whether you’re ready or not a new year is upon us. I think many people, especially in and around Napa and Sonoma counties, are happy to see 2017 fade into the historical sections of their minds.

With the dawning of a New Year, we start to think about resolutions or goals for the coming year. Who do you want to be when you’re looking at your 2018 self on the dawn of 2019?

This tradition is not one with a short history. In fact, the ancient Babylonians nearly 4,000 years ago are the first known to set New Year’s resolutions. Theirs came in the form of promises made to their gods in order to have favor bestowed upon them, and if you failed you would be out of the favor of said gods, which sounds like it wasn’t a popular place to be. Lucky for us we don’t live in ancient Babylon and if you fail at your resolutions you can always just try again.

You’re probably thinking, “Where is she going with this?” I think that’s a common thought in the beginning of most of my articles. BUT, I have the perfect answer to that and to your New Year’s resolutions that are health- and fitness-centered. Which, let’s face it, many people are. We are launching a brand new fitness series in collaboration with Calistoga Fit, RecFit! This new and fun program is a three-month series of group exercise classes held from 9 to 10 a.m. on Monday, Wednesday and Friday at the new Boys & Girls Club gym.

And, since every good workout program has variety to keep both your mind and muscles stimulated; we will be offering both a functional strength training class and a yoga class as part of the series. Monday and Friday join us for Fit Fusion where you can kick your fitness into gear with exercises to focus on strength, endurance, speed, mobility and balance. Wednesdays you can lengthen and strengthen those muscles with a Hatha yoga practice. It’s the perfect combination of strength, flexibility, and endurance; as well as variety to keep you engaged on the New Year’s resolution wagon.
