The Napa County Sheriff’s Office says it has made a tentative identification of the body found in a vineyard in Calistoga this week, but the name will not be released until next week.
Using mostly fingerprint records, an evidence technician with the Sheriff’s Office identified the body, sheriff’s Capt. Tracey Stuart said Friday afternoon. The body was that of a male, she said.
The family of the person has been notified, Stuart said.
An autopsy was conducted Friday, but cause of death as not been established, Stuart said.
The man’s identity won’t be released until a second evidence specialist confirms the findings of the first, Stuart said.
A vineyard worker found the body in a creek around midday on Tuesday on the Kenefick Ranch, a sprawling vineyard on the east side of Calistoga, just outside the city line.
Investigators have not said how long the man had been dead, though it had been a long time based on the level of decomposition, Stuart said. It’s not clear how the body came to be in the vineyard.
