Calistoga schools will remain closed the rest of the week due to fire-related activities, the district’s superintendent said.
Calistoga Joint Unified School District did not hold classes Monday or Tuesday due to the Tubbs Fire activity. The decision was made “due to the number of staff and students who have been evacuated or lost their homes, poor air quality, road closures, and in the interest of safety,” said Erin Smith-Hagberg, superintendent.
“Communication services are still very spotty and our staff members are spread out through several communities so I don’t yet have an accurate count of how many CJUSD staff and families have lost their homes or been evacuated,” she said.
It’s too early to know how the district will respond to the needs of the students and staff.
“Once we do have that information, our district will assess how best to provide support to them,” Smith-Hagberg said.
Napa County of Education (NCOE) said that due to the fires in Napa and Sonoma counties additional school districts are closed at least through Friday including Howell Mountain Elementary School District, Pope Valley Union Elementary School District and St. Helena Unified School District, and at this time Napa Valley Unified School District will be closed Wednesday and Thursday.
In addition Napa Valley College, and the programs and offices of the Napa County Office of Education, will also be closed through Friday.
“Families and staff are advised to follow public health advice regarding smoke and air quality, and to stay safe,” said Seana Wagner, NCOE director of communications and special projects, in a statement.
