It may be months before investigators conclude how Zahid Naheim’s body came to be in a vineyard near Calistoga in mid-December, the Sheriff’s Office said this week.
Naheim, also known as Jeremy Reid, was homeless and had been living in the area before his body was discovered by a vineyard worker on the sprawling Kinefick Ranch vineyard just east of the city line along Silverado Trail on Dec. 18, spokeswoman Capt. Tracey Stuart said Tuesday.
Investigators returned to the scene last weekend “looking for his camp and his belongings and to find out where he was living,” she said.
The county coroner’s office said Tuesday that determining a cause of death may take several months.
At the time the body was found, investigators said Naheim had been dead for a while, based on the level of decomposition, but it was not clear how long he had been at the site where he was found.
His body was identified using fingerprint records.
Until the cause of death is found and investigators know more about his whereabouts before his death, Stuart said, it is impossible to draw a firm conclusion on what happened to him.
