A man was arrested at mid-day Wednesday in Calistoga on suspicion of pouring battery acid onto the face of a woman while she slept, according to the Calistoga Police Department.

Claude Thomas Smith, 72, of San Francisco, was arrested after he was interviewed at the Calistoga Police Department, Sgt. Tim Martin said.

The attack allegedly occurred the night before at a residence in the 2400 block of Foothill Boulevard, police said.

According to the woman, who was interviewed at 1:50 a.m. Wednesday, she was hit in the head while she was asleep, then a caustic substance was poured on her face, police said.

She was treated and released from St. Helena Hospital for non-life threatening injuries, Martin said.

Smith was booked into the Napa County jail on suspicion of pouring a caustic acid onto someone, assault with a deadly weapon and domestic violence, police said. The investigation is ongoing, Martin said.
