Pianist and leader Larry Vuckovich makes his first appearance at Blue Note Napa on Sunday, Dec. 10 at 4 p.m.

His special guest will be percussionist Big Black in this performance presented by the Napa Valley Jazz Society.

Vuckovich will be joined by bassist Jeff Chambers, drummer Akira Tana, and hard-driving tenor saxophonist Rob Roth. The program is designed to highlight the percussion skills of guest artist Blac, and will range from jazz classics to Latin and World music, including funky boogaloos and romantic boleros.

Larry Vuckovich and the legendary Big Black go back 50 years to when they met and performed with the great jazz vocalist Jon Hendricks at the Trident. Over his long jazz career, Black has performed with other masters including Dizzy Gillespie, Randy Weston, and Freddie Hubbard. Jazz critic Ralph J. Gleason, wrote, “Every moment Big Black is on stage, we are in the major league.”

“Larry has played with many of the biggest names in jazz. So, when he came to us with the idea of presenting his old friend and colleague Big Black, we wanted to learn more,” said Jazz Society president and event producer Bill Hart.

The Vuckovich/Big Black concert is also the Jazz Society’s first presentation in the Blue Note Club. “We are delighted to welcome the Jazz Society to our venue,” said Blue Note Napa managing director Ken Tesler. “These folks have been bringing great jazz to Napa since long before we opened. We hope this is the beginning of a long and fruitful partnership.”

Reservations may be obtained at www.nvjs.org or by calling (707) 224-5299. Prices are $25 for Jazz Society members and $45 for non-members.
