Lucky Penny Productions brings the modern classic musical “Annie” to the stage Dec. 1-23, featuring Arty Award winner Kennedy Williams in the title role and two rotating casts of orphan girls.
With music by Charles Strouse, lyrics by Martin Charnin, and book by Thomas Meehan, the original Broadway production opened in 1977, won the Tony Award for Best Musical, and ran for nearly six years. The musical’s songs “Tomorrow” and “It’s the Hard Knock Life” are among its most popular musical numbers.
Pluck and positivity help little orphan Annie as she charms everyone’s hearts despite a next-to-nothing start in 1930s New York City. Determined to find her parents who abandoned her years ago on the doorstep of a New York City Orphanage run by the cruel Miss Hannigan, Annie escapes, befriends President Franklin Delano Roosevelt, and finds a new home and family in billionaire Oliver Warbucks, his personal secretary Grace Farrell, and a lovable mutt named Sandy.
“As a child actor, I performed in several productions of ‘Annie’,” said Lucky Penny’s Taylor Bartolucci. “It’s a thrill for me to direct this show and teach a new generation of young performers.”
Kennedy Williams, an Arty Award winner for her role in Lucky Penny’s “Big River” last season, leads the cast alongside veteran Mike Schaeffer as Oliver “Daddy” Warbucks and Lucky Penny associate artist Heather Buck as Grace Farrell. The cast also features Lucky Penny associate artists Danielle DeBow and Michael Scott Wells as Lily St. Regis and Rooster, with Jennifer Stark as Miss Hannigan.
Two sets of orphan girls will perform in rotation. The “Hannigan Cast” performs Dec. 2, 8, 10, 14, 16, 21 and 23 with Julia Carr, Sophie Ha, Lydia Jackson, Maggie Rose Cooke, Eva Wendel, Anna Harrington, Natalie Carr, and Triniti Vizza.
The “Warbucks Cast” performs Dec. 1, 3, 7, 9, 15, 17 and 22 with Julien McLauglin, Ainsley Mcnicoll, Talulah Finkelstein, Sophia Morales, Olivia Nichols, Grace Marseilles, Elizabella Sanchez and Isabelle DeNatale. Understudy Olivia Nichols performs the role of Annie on Dec. 9.
The cast also includes Wendy Remington, Jeff Bristow, Jessica Romero. Jessica Gerson, Marjory Harper, Becky Doyle, Michael Mautner, Zane Walters, Emma Sutherland, Joseph DeNatale and Rachel Davidson.
In addition to directing “Annie,” Bartolucci and Barry Martin are the scenic designers, with musical direction by Craig Burdette, choreography by Staci Arriaga, costume design by Barbara McFadden, lighting design by April George, hair and makeup design by Brette Bartolucci, and property design by Allison Sutherland.
“Annie” will be presented at the Lucky Penny Community Arts Center, 1758 Industrial Way, Napa. Tickets can be purchased online at luckypennynapa.com or by calling 707-266-6305.
