Caldwell Snyder Gallery in St. Helena is showing recent paintings by Ryan Jones, a California artist who describes his work as a “fusion of the real and surreal.”
His paintings feature images infused with fantasy and a hint of noir: beautiful women and mysterious luxury settings of secluded swimming pools and shadowy rooms with ornate furniture,.
Rather than frame faces as ordinary portraits, Jones gives viewers glimpses of his subjects, and shows fragments of life seen through a restricted lens, even, perhaps, a keyhole, suggesting possible stories of what has happened and what is to come.
Jones studied fine art at Stanford University and lives and works in the Bay Area. He has worked as a matte painting supervisor at Lucasfilm, and his paintings have been featured in motion pictures as well as on the covers of Entertainment Weekly, Wired Magazine, Cinefax, Post, and Kult Magazine. Jones’s work has been showcased in galleries in San Francisco, Los Angeles, and Singapore, and has been purchased by collectors in the film and technology industries.
