Longtime Napa residents Bill and Sue Lipschultz celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary on June 18 in their signature style: surrounded by family, friends, music and wine.

Bill says that he was lucky to catch Susie’s eye while on Army leave in Tenino, Washington, in the spring of 1954. The two sweethearts made it official in the garden of Sue’s Family on June 23, 1956.

Both Bill and Sue have been much-loved teachers, mentors and friends. Bill started his teaching career at Ridgeview Junior high and then transferred to the then-brand-new Vintage High School (Go Crushers!). After getting the children off to school, Sue joined the teaching profession, first at Northwood Elementary, then later at Vichy Elementary.

Retirement from teaching marked the beginning of world travel for this intrepid duo. Taking full advantage of his military retirement benefits, Bill and Sue often take off on “mystery trips,” going wherever the C4 transport plane is going. Australia, Germany, England and 13 other countries have all vied for the couple’s favorite destination.

On the few days they stay home, volunteer work keeps them busy. Bill jokes that they call him the “young kid” when he drives for Molly’s Angels. Sue prepares her weekly meal for “The Table” and both are active in California’s Retired Teachers Association.

A full description of their happy and busy lives wouldn’t be complete without mention of Sue’s gorgeous quilts. From blue-ribbon winners to those donated to Social Services, anyone who has encountered one of her creations will appreciate the time and love invested in them. And, Bill, don’t even plan on prying him away from his Fantasy Football between August and January.

Bill and Sue have three married daughters, and three grandchildren to spoil: daughters Lorri Rieve of Ramona, California; Theresa Valls of Portland, Oregon; and Rebecca Mieliwocki of Glendale, California; and grandchildren Caitlyn Rieve, William Rieve and Davis Mieliwocki.
