Deborah Louise Rodeen Calvin — Debby, to most and Abby to her grandchildren — passed away peacefully in her home on Saturday, September 2nd, after a short illness, in which she was frequently reminded of what she surely always knew: that she was deeply loved and cared for by many.
Debby was a lifelong Napa resident, born on November 11, 1950, to parents Dorthy and Wayne Rodeen. She is survived by her sister Sally Rodeen Calbert, her children Robert Calvin and Shea Herrera, her son-in-law Keith Kouri, her boyfriend Joe Threat, and her dearest friend Larry Thomas, as well as her grandchildren Emma, Colton, and Jake Kouri, her biggest fans and truest loves. Oh, lets not forget her trusty companions, Leaha and Reba!
She will be remembered for her love for her family, her razor sharp wit, infectious laugh, and unrivaled skills in the kitchen. With Debby in the driver’s seat, every errand was an adventure, and every chore was just the chance to discover something new. Whatever she did, she gave it a little ‘extra:’ a little extra sparkle on her famous Christmas tree, a little extra food on every table she ever set, a little extra gift in the care packages she made for her grandchildren, and always, everywhere, a little extra sass.
She will also be remembered for the many years she spent giving back to our community, and especially to our children. She worked for the Napa County Office of Education for 25 years, devoting her powerful voice and unflagging energy to advocating for children with special needs, and will never be forgotten by the children she worked for, and the families she worked with, as a fierce and uncompromising advocate when they needed one most.
A red Camaro will never look as good as it did with Debby in it, and a brighter, more dazzling smile we will surely never see. But while she’s gone far too soon, we can take comfort knowing that her wild and wonderful spirit lives on in her children, grandchildren, and the many who were lucky enough to love, and be loved, by the funniest, sassiest, strongest-willed woman we had the pleasure to call ours for a time. A Celebration of Life will be held in the club house of 150 Silverado Trail in Napa on Sunday September 10th at 1pm.
