Dodie left us on January 1st, 2018—very peacefully and with that familiar smile, which all who knew and loved her can clearly picture. She will be missed. She had a magnetic caring spirit that touched everyone she knew. Her love for LIFE was contagious. She made everyone happy to be in her presence and had a remarkable ability to keep all content in the worst of situations. She would say, ‘My life’s been full, I have savored much....my devoted family, good friends, good times and loved one’s touch.’
Dodie was born on February 16, 1930 in Manila, Philippines to Alfred and Madeline Peters. Her life was drastically changed at the age of 11, when in 1941 following the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor; the Japanese Military attacked Manila and interned Dodie, her older sister Peggy and their parents to Santo Thomas Internment Camp. Three and one-half years later, after their liberation, they moved to San Francisco and Dodie became an American Citizen.
In June of 1948, prior to going to the University of California at Berkeley, she met her husband, Joe Borroughs, while sailing on the Matson Cruise ship, The Lurline, to Hawaii. They married 2 years later in San Francisco. They moved to Joliet Illinois, where Joe attended the American School of Laundry and Dodie created greeting cards for American Greetings. Three months pregnant, they moved to Rancho Mirage, CA then to Piedmont and finally settled in St. Helena in 1958. Dodie was very apprehensive about the move from her beloved San Francisco-East Bay area, but she soon embraced St. Helena with open arms where she lived for 60 years raising their 3 daughters.
She loved playing tennis and golf, and was a whiz kid at the game of Mahjong. Her travels took her to Hawaii often, as her Hawaiian Spirit connected with many of her relatives there. She enjoyed working for Freemark Abbey Gifts and Gourmet for many years and even was a partner in her very own shop in Moraga called Kountry Kitchen.
Dodie’s beloved husband preceded her death in May 2014. She is survived by her three children, Bea Loeffler (T. Carl) of Newport Beach, Robin Borroughs of Benicia, and Betsy Borroughs Morgan (Greg) of St. Helena, along with their 4 grandchildren, Taylor Loeffler, J.J. Stowaser, Kacey Morgan Zeller (Brian Zeller,) Whitney Morgan and Dodie’s great grandson, Blake Morgan Zeller.
