Joice, a longtime resident of St. Helena, passed away peacefully on November 14, 2017 at the St. Helena Hospital surrounded by her loving family. Joice was born on April 14, 1943 in Winnemucca, NV to Richard Charles and Virginia Elizabeth Joice Morrall. She was raised in Menlo Park and graduated from Woodside High School. Joice graduated from San Jose State University in 1965. She continued graduate studies to become an Occupational Therapist and enjoyed working in that field for many years. In 1966 Joice and Michael Beatty were married and established a home in Menlo Park where their sons James Russell and Patrick Morrall were born. The family moved to Napa County in 1977 where Joice worked hard to help establish the Beatty Ranch Vineyard on Howell Mountain. She was active in community affairs while living on Howell Mountain and even more active after moving to St. Helena in 1990.

Joice served for many years on the following boards or agencies: St Helena Beautification Foundation; St. Helena City Planning Commission; Commission on Aging; the Napa Alliance on Aging (Senior Advocate 2010-2013); The Advisory Committee to In-Home Supportive Services; The Napa Solano Advisory Board on Aging. She was Commissioner Emeritus to Napa Valley Commission on Aging (Chair, Vice Chair and Board 2000-2014) and on the IHHS Advisory Committee (Chair and Board Member). Joice served on the Elder Abuse Prevention Planning Council and under the auspices of the District Attorney’s office championed The Care Giver Permit aka Bettys Law. She also served as an Up Valley Senior Advocate (2009-2017) and was a Rianda House Senior Activity Center Board Member.

In order to strengthen the community, Joice was instrumental in bringing her friends into each organization that she was involved in. She fostered fellowship in all of her organizations.

Joice’s biggest legacy is her work with the St. Helena Rotary Club, which she joined in 1989, the year after Rotary International began allowing women to join its ranks. Joice was a Rotarian for the past 28 years, and was proud of her record of perfect attendances. She served as the first woman president of the club. She was involved with the Rotary’s Festival of Brotherhood which paired the resources of the St. Helena Rotary with the needs of the Rotary Clubs in Mexico. Joice traveled to Russia and Africa with local members on Rotary International trips to bring medical supplies to the needy. As an active Rotary member, she was a driving force in establishing and organizing the annual Rotary Winter Ball whose primary beneficiary was the Boys and Girls Club. For her work with the Ball, Joice was granted an Honorary Membership, and is the only adult member, of the Boys & Girls Club of St. Helena. As Rotary President, she spearheaded the first “Fun For Funds” charity golf tournament in June, 2016 at Aetna Springs Golf Course in Pope Valley with all proceeds going to help make the Cardiac Hybrid Operating Room at the St. Helena Hospital a reality.

Joice was an avid Bocce Ball player and played on several different teams. She was captain of her Monday night team for over 10 years, always in charge of “The Mother Basket”.

For over 15 years she was the self-appointed master of the “weenie wagon” at the Ag Supply annual golf tournament at Aetna Springs Golf Course in Pope Valley.

For many years, Joice acted as a conservator and advisor for elder care needs for our local community and was a valuable resource to many in need who had nowhere else to go. She devoted countless hours to supporting people and helping fix problems as an Eldercare Specialist. Joice was an outspoken, opinionated woman who stood up for people’s rights and sensibilities. She was particularly aware of the cultural devastation of age and illness and its impact on people in our community

Joice was a passionate cook, and was always talking about food, shopping for exotic ingredients and testing new recipes “that were to die for!” and sharing her treats and recipes with others.

Joice is survived by her two sons, James Russell Beatty of Angwin and Patrick Morrall Beatty of Angwin. Also her brother Rick Morrall of Penn Valley, CA and niece Alexandra Pribuss and brother John Morrall of Hanalai, Kauai, HI and niece Nichole Morrall and nephew Tyler Morrall, and her ex-husband Michael Beatty of Angwin and many dear friends in the community.

To honor Joice’s passion for entertaining a Celebration of Her Life will be held from 1:00 – 4:00 pm Dec. 16, 2017 at the Native Sons’ Hall in St. Helena.
