Seaman Alex Tjeerdema, 22, son of Ron and Cindy Tjeerdema and brother of Derek and Evan Tjeerdema, completed nine weeks of basic training on Oct. 18, 2013, at U.S. Navy Recruit Training Command at Great Lakes, Ill.
During the nine weeks of training, Tjeerdema completed an intense program that focused on rigorous physical conditioning, confidence building, teamwork, core values, basic naval orientation, technical training and weapons instruction. He served his division as the Recruit Education Petty Officer. His division earned award flags in all four mission areas, as well as the Chief of Naval Operations Honor Flag for exemplary achievement.
On Oct. 15, 2013, he completed Battlestations 21 and became a U.S. sailor. His parents and brothers attended his Pass in Review on Oct. 18 at Midway Hall at U.S. Navy Recruit Training Command at Great Lakes, Ill.
Seaman Tjeerdema is now stationed at Navy Nuclear Power Training Command in Goose Creek, S.C., where he will train for 18 months to be a nuclear electronics technician. As a nuclear ET on a submarine or aircraft carrier, he will perform duties in nuclear propulsion plants operating reactor control, propulsion and power generation systems.
Tjeerdema is a 2009 graduate of Napa High School.
