LOS ANGELES - The Cystic Fibrosis Foundation hosted a sold-out “A Culinary Evening with the California Winemasters” on May 17.
About 1,400 guests from around the country gathered on the historic “Midwest Street” back lot at Warner Bros. Studios in Burbank to taste the work of 50 chefs paired with 75 of California’s most talented winemakers to present a tasting and hors d’oeuvres extravaganza.
The 25th annual “Winemasters” netted more than $1,850,000 for the Foundation’s vital research and care centers. More than $27 million has been raised since the event’s inception.
“Winemasters” boasts one of the most extravagant auctions in history with over 800 live and silent auction items from fantasy trips to exclusive collector wines. The live auction included a six-day stay for three couples in Paris and Burgundy highlighted by a private visit, tasting and luncheon at Dom Perignon, and a magnum of 2004 La Tache donated by Aubert de Villaine that sold for $52,000.
A two-week wine tasting holiday to Argentina with visits to major wineries and a side trip to Patagonia sold for $48,000, and a one-week holiday in South Africa’s newest wine appellation with an extension in Tanzania that features an opportunity to voluntourism – working with children on conservation in a village near Victoria Falls sold for $24,000. The bidding for an eight-day all luxury trip to Turkey including a cruise and visit to Turkey’s growing wine region was competitive and enthusiastic with a winning bid of $28,000; and five 10-night stays in Spain, Portugal, the U.K., Germany and Greece at hotels of the winning bidders’ choice from the Small Luxury Hotels of the World portfolio sold for $30,000.
Live auction wine lots included 12 magnums from 1984-1995 and 8 1.0 L from 1996-2003 of Grace Family Vineyards that sold for $36,000, 1 bottle each of 2003, 2004 and 2006 Domaine de la Romanee Conti Montrachet that sold for $20,000 and a 24-bottle collection from 1990-1999 Dunn Cabernet Sauvignon Howell Mountain, 1990-1999 Dunn Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley and 1992-1995 Dunn Petite Sirah that was snatched up for $17,000.
The 26th annual Culinary Evening with the California Winemasters event is set for next May 16, 2015 at Warner Bros. Studios.
