A group of 26 Napa Valley Vintner members is traveling to Hangzhou, Beijing, Shanghai and Xi’an from April 12-21 to share their wines and their stories with consumers, members of the wine trade and media.

The Napa Valley Vintners has been bringing trade missions of vintners to China for more than

15 years. More than 25 percent of its 400-plus members export wines to China.

During this time, the Napa Valley Vintners realized the need to protect the name “Napa Valley” on wine sold in China. The Vintners worked directly with the Chinese government, which, after understanding the unique attributes of the valley, negotiated for the Napa Valley to receive “Geographic Indication” in early October 2012.

Napa Valley is the first wine region outside China to be recognized with this designation. Geographic Indication status provides the pivotal element in consumer protection against wines illegitimately labeled as being from Napa Valley in this important and expanding market.
