A tasting of California syrahs is the focus of the eighth annual Wine Advocate Seminar on Tuesday, Oct. 16, at 1:30 p.m. at the Culinary Institute of America’s Greystone campus in St. Helena. The seminar, hosted by wine critic Antonio Galloni, benefits the Wine Advocate Endowed Scholarship fund for students of the college’s Rudd Center for professional wine studies. Tickets can be purchased online or by calling 967-2400. Reservations for the seminar are $1,000 per person and include a tax-deductible donation of $750.

Galloni will also host the traditional “Great Friends, Great Food, Great Causes ... and Great Wine” bring-your-own-bottle dinner at Press restaurant, benefiting the Robert M. Parker endowed scholarship fund as well as the Mount Sinai Hospital in New York City. Tickets for the dinner are $1,200. Tickets for both events are $2,000. For details, visit
