A 38-year-old off-duty California Highway Patrol officer from Napa riding a personal motorcycle was killed Friday in a traffic collision on Jameson Canyon Road in Solano County, the CHP said.

The collision was reported at 5:45 p.m., CHP Officer Chris Parker said.

The crash occurred after a 1995 Toyota pickup truck, heading east, tried to make a left turn into a driveway across the road in the 1600 block of Jameson Canyon Road just west of Red Top Road, the CHP said.

But while making the turn, the driver saw a motorcycle approaching from the right, Parker said. The pickup’s driver, Edward Turner II, 39, of Esparto, tried to accelerate to get out of the way of the motorcycle, but the 2010 Kawasaki Ninja struck the right rear of the truck, officials said. The Napa motorcyclist, whose name was not released Saturday, was ejected from his bike onto the roadway, the CHP said.

The driver of a 1999 Honda CRV, which was eastbound behind the pickup truck, saw two “unknown objects coming at him.” The motorcycle passed the Honda, Parker said. However, the motorcyclist hit the front of the Honda, the CHP said.

The motorcyclist was pronounced dead at the scene, Parker said.

The driver of the Honda CRV, Marlon Daranciang, 50, of Martinez, was not injured, he said. Neither was Turner nor his passenger, Cary Knutson, 18, of Esparto, according to the CHP.

Jameson Canyon Road/Highway 12 was closed in both directions between South Kelly Road and Interstate 80 from 6 p.m. Friday until 4:34 a.m. Saturday, according to the CHP. Traffic was detoured through other roads, including American Canyon Road. Drugs or alcohol are not considered to be a factor in the crash, Parker said.

Anyone with information on the crash is asked to call CHP Sgt. Diana McDermott at 373-7892.

It's always sad when you lose a protector of our civil freedoms. This is a special person.
I thank him for his service to us all.

This is a very sad day for all those who knew him. He was a quiet, gentle man who would not harm anyone and who was one who really cared about you and accepted you for who you were. Never judgemental and always there when you needed him and very supportive and truly caring. I knew him a short time, but knew him as someone who wass an angel here on earth. He will be truly missed by all those who knew him.

How sad :(

A tragedy….

Very sad. John was a great guy, a gentle soul and a fun riding buddy. He will be sorely missed . . .
