Firefighters responded to a small grass fire that broke out late Sunday afternoon west of the South Napa Marketplace.

At 5:45 p.m., the Napa Fire Department sent out three engines after reports of flames off the north shoulder of Kansas Avenue, west of Home Depot, Capt. Zach Curren said.

About a quarter-acre of vegetation was blackened along a gravel path extending westward from the shopping center, but a stream branching east from the Napa River blocked the fire’s spread, and no structures were threatened, he said.

Fire crews contained the flames in 10 minutes, according to Curren. The cause of the fire was not immediately known.
