A 50-year-old man was arrested in Napa Friday night after leading police on a foot pursuit that ended in a brief struggle, police said.
Around 10:15 p.m., an officer attempted to stop Ronald Ervin Stapes, of Napa, as he rode a bicycle in the area of Lincoln Avenue and Main Street for an alleged vehicle code violation, authorities said. Stapes allegedly refused to stop and rode through the parking lots of several businesses before heading east on Lincoln.
The officer was able to get in front of the suspect at Yajome Street, police said. Stapes then dropped the bicycle and allegedly ran into a nearby yard.
After a brief struggle, the officer was able to take the suspect into custody, police said. Stapes was found to be on probation and parole. He also allegedly was carrying suspected methamphetamine and had a prescription opiate but no prescription.
He was arrested on suspicion of possession of methamphetamine, possession of a controlled substance, resisting arrest and violating probation, police said. He was booked into the Napa jail.
