A former massage therapist student in Napa was sentenced last week to 30 days in jail and three years probation for sexual battery, according to court records.

Jose Rivera Corona, 44, of Napa, was sentenced on April 16 in Napa County Superior Court. He was accused of penetrating a fellow student with a finger during a practice session in August, according to court documents.

Corona, who has been out of custody on bail, will have to register as a sex offender, according to the court minutes. Judge Francisca Tisher ordered Corona to jail on May 17.

In February, Corona pleaded no contest to sexual battery, a misdemeanor. A plea of no contest carries the same weight as a guilty plea at sentencing. As part of the plea agreement, a felony charge of sexual penetration with an object by force was dismissed.

According to his probation report, Corona was practicing Swedish massage on Aug. 16 on the victim at the massage school when the incident occurred. The woman immediately reported the incident to an instructor who had briefly stepped away from the room to answer a phone call, according to the court document.

A school representative in February said Corona was dismissed from the program when the incident was reported.
