A free glaucoma screening will be offered at The Eye Works Optometry, 1328 Pearl St. in downtown Napa, from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday.

Glaucoma affects nearly 4 million Americans, and is the second most common cause of blindness in the U.S., said Dr. Craig Sultan of Eye Works.

Symptoms of advanced glaucoma include blurred vision, halos around lights, loss of peripheral vision and difficulty focusing on objects.

People at higher risk of developing glaucoma include those over age 60, people with diabetes, and people who have experienced a serious eye injury.

“Even though there is no cure for glaucoma, early detection can slow or prevent further vision loss,” Sultan said.

Participants in the free screening are asked to RSVP no later than Tuesday by calling 254-2020 or emailing staff@the-eyeworks.com.
