Rep. Mike Thompson, D-St. Helena, will host a community discussion with athletes, parents and coaches on how to identify and prevent concussions.

The meeting will be Wednesday from 6:30 to 8 p.m. in the American Canyon High School gym, 3000 Newell Drive, American Canyon.

Announced participants include Dr. Brian Freeto, an orthopedic surgeon with Napa Valley Orthopeadic Medical Group; Rob Brandon, a physical therapist and owner of Napa Valley Physical Therapy; Melissa Bartholemew, an athletic trainer at Napa Valley College, and Jeff Turner, athletic director, Jesse Bethel High School in Vallejo.

There is growing awareness of concussions and head injuries among athletes and people who participate in recreational sports, Thompson’s office said.
