A man was charged Monday in Napa County Superior Court with vehicle theft and reckless driving in connection with the theft of a SUV last week, according to court records.

On Jan. 3, Travis James Wilkinson, 29, of Napa, was suspected of stealing a 2003 Ford Escape and driving at speed exceeding 100 mph on Highways 29 and 221, according to police.

An off-duty Napa County Sheriff’s deputy started following the silver Ford Escape after it passed him at a high rate of speed on northbound Highway 29 near Paoli Loop in American Canyon, police said in court records. The vehicle then took Highway 221 toward Imola Avenue in Napa, allegedly running red lights and driving in excess of 100 mph, police said.

Wilkinson abandoned the SUV at the Best Western near the corner of Imola and Soscol avenues and took off running into the nearby Val’s Liquors on Soscol, police said.

The officer detained the suspect without incident at the liquor store, police said. Wilkinson was arrested and booked into the Napa County jail, according to the jail logs and the court records.

On Monday, Wilkinson was arraigned for reckless driving and vehicle theft, according to court records. The next hearing is Jan. 16.
