A 19-year-old Vallejo man was identified as the person killed in a Sunday afternoon crash on Monticello Road, according to the California Highway Patrol.

Cody A. Dalen was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash, which occurred around 1:30 p.m. on Monticello Road/Highway 121, about a mile south of Circle Oaks Drive, the CHP said. The driver, 18-year-old Adam A. Luzzi, and the second passenger, Antonio Del Castillo, 17, were transported to the Queen of the Valley Medical Center with major and moderate injuries, respectively.

The three occupants were wearing seatbelts, the CHP said. As of 10 a.m. Monday, Luzzi was in stable condition at the Queen. Del Castillo was not admitted to that hospital, so he was either treated and released or transported to another hospital, according to a Queen of the Valley spokesperson.

The solo-vehicle crash occurred when the young men’s southbound 1994 Honda Civic veered off the roadway, overturned, and landed on its roof about 40 feet below the road in a creek, the CHP said.

Shortly after, a CHP sergeant on patrol in the area saw a group of individuals who had been caravanning with the crashed Honda, the CHP said. The sergeant called authorities, then climbed down the embankment to try to help the trapped occupants, who had to be extricated from the car.

No one was arrested, so it is unlikely drugs or alcohol were involved, but speed was likely a factor, said CHP spokesman Garrett Ray.

This is such a sad and tragic accident! After living at the lake for over 35 years, it's always heartbreaking to hear of any fatlities, whether on the highway or on the lake. I was coming home after this accident happened and traffic was blocked. All of the cars coming up to the lake were going so fast that they had to change lanes to avoid hitting me and piling into other stopped cars. They could see that traffic was stopped and should have been able to slow down, but they had to swerve into the oncoming lane to avoid a pile up...Sadly nothing can change this tragic accident, but people really should slow down. Our deepest condolences to the family of Cody Dalen. Very tragic.

I hate driving to the lake just for that reason. I go the speed limit and there are cars tailgating me the whole way. It always feels so unsafe. People unfortunately tend to have to learn the hard way.
