Clear skies are expected to lead off the new week in Napa even as a band of potentially heavy rainstorms looms for Wednesday and beyond, according to the National Weather Service.

Sunny conditions are forecast for the area today, with a high of 68 degrees and a nighttime low of 39 at Napa County Airport. South winds are predicted to range from 3 to 6 mph.

After continued sunny skies on Monday and Tuesday, rain is expected to reach the North Bay early Wednesday and persist for most of the week. The weather service has issued a special weather statement due to the possibility of heavy rainfall and high winds, particularly at higher elevations.

Here is the five-day temperature outlook for Napa:

Monday: 65 / 40

Tuesday: 64 / 44 — 50 percent chance of rain after 10 p.m.

Wednesday: 63 / 46 — rain

Thursday: 65 / 46 — chance of rain

Friday: 65 / 46 — rain likely
