Alex Shantz was elected as Napa Valley College’s student trustee in a special election held at the campus on Dec. 3 and 4.
Shantz will fill the vacancy left by outgoing trustee Ruscal Cayangyang, who is leaving the position as of Dec. 31 to pursue full-time studies at UC Berkeley. Shantz will be carrying out the remainder of Cayangyang’s term for the spring semester.
Shantz won the election with more than 55 percent of the vote. He ran against one other candidate: Associated Students of NVC Senator Angela Ituriaga, who received nearly 45 percent of the vote. A total of 427 students voted over the two-day period.
Outside of the college, Shantz serves in local government as an at-large representative on the Napa County Gang and Youth Violence Commission. He also serves on a Community Garden Ad Hoc Committee formed by the Napa County Local Food Advisory Council.
