More than 100 firefighters and some two dozen fire engines gathered at St. Mary’s Episcopal Church on Third Street Tuesday morning to say goodbye to a deceased CalFire battalion chief.

They paid tribute to Karen Jones Shubin, the 47-year-old mother of four children who died after a two-year battle with brain cancer.

The scene outside the church was filled with solemn pageantry as a uniform color guard marched beneath a large American flag waving from atop an extended Napa Fire Department ladder truck, while a long line of public safety personnel stood at attention.

Firefighters and their vehicles had assembled from various CalFire units and fire departments from throughout the region.

Shubin grew up and lived in Napa, where she and her husband, Dave, raised four children. She was a 1983 Napa High School and 1987 U.C. Davis graduate.

At the conclusion of the funeral Mass, a procession of cars and fire apparatus wound its way up Third Street, then south on Highway 29, bound for a cemetery in Novato.
