Napa County parents looking to entertain their children over the holiday break have plenty of local options. From ice skating and hula-hooping, to cooking demos and Scrabble tournaments, Napa Valley has numerous events aimed at children of all ages.  

Below is a partial listing of local family-friendly events taking place between now and the first day back to school on Monday, Jan. 7:

— “Discovery Days for Kids” at the Napa Valley Museum

1 to 3 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 28, Wednesday, Jan. 2, and Friday, Jan. 4

Dec. 28 — “Wind-up Paper Insects, Bees and Butterflies – Oh My!” Families will learn to create wind-up butterflies, bees, and insects out of paper.

Jan. 2 — “Pine Cone Bird Feeder.” Using peanut butter or honey as edible glue, pine cones will be frosted and rolled into bird feed to make a delicious treat for Napa Valley birds. After the project, participants will stroll through a meadow looking for hungry birds and explore the banks of Hinman Creek.

Jan. 4 — “Sew-What? Felt sewing projects.” Scissors, felt, needle and thread will be used to create Tic-Tac-Toe game boards, tote bags and other various sewing projects.

Napa on Ice (outdoor skating rink)

Noon to 10 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 27, through Saturday, Jan. 5, and from noon to 9 p.m. on Sunday, Jan. 6 (hours of operation are weather dependent)

Community Hoop Jam (Fuller Park)

Noon to 2 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 29, and Saturday, Jan. 5


All skill levels and ages are welcome. Adult- and child-sized hula hoops will be provided.

“Winter Camp” at Scientopia

9 a.m. to 4 p.m. for a regular day, or 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. for a short day on Monday, Dec. 31 through Friday, Jan. 4 (Closed Tuesday, Jan. 1)

$52 per regular day or $30 per short day

Dec. 31 through Jan. 4 — “Mad Scientists & Artsy Artists.” Kids will combine science and art through various activities.

“Kid’s Cooking Demo” at the Culinary Center at Whole Foods

4 to 5:30 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 2


Every Wednesday in January, chef Jerry Aman will conduct cooking demos for kids. All kids interested in cooking, or those who already help in the kitchen, are invited. Aman will show kids how they can make food for school lunches, after school snacks, and for family dinners.

— Events for kids and teens at the Napa County Main Library

6:30 to 8:00 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 2, and 2 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 3


Jan. 2 — “Library Movie Night for Kids.” The library will host a Dr. Seuss-themed movie night for children. Kids are invited to come in pajamas and bring their pillows from home. Free popcorn and drinks will be provided.

Jan. 3 — “Teen Scrabble Tournament.” Teens can play solo or in a team of two against other Scrabble players for the coveted title of “Scrabble Champion.” Winner gets the Napa Scrabble Championship title belt.
